Prerequisites

Prerequisite 1

This program requires a Java enabled web browser using a high speed Internet connection.  Supported web browsers include Firefox 2.0, Internet Explorer 6, and Safari.  Other browsers may work as well.  If the Go Button or the Test Button is unresponsive, the web browser may need to allow Pop Ups in order to proceed to the Stock Cluster web page. 

 

Prerequisite 2

Java Runtime Edition Version 5.0 must be installed on the computer and enabled in the web browser.  To test if the web browser is Java ready, please go to the Java download page: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and click ÒVerifyÓ. 

 

Prerequisite 3

The first time the program is used, it will display a certificate of trust.  Click ÒTrustÓ (or ÒRunÓ) in order to use the program.

 

 

 

Instructions

Step 1

Choose a stock group from the Stock Group Combo Box.  Groups may be: S&P 500, Industry Group, Industry, Sub-Industry, Company, or Ticker.[i]

 

 

Step 2

Click on the List Items Button to display the member items from the selected stock group onto the Selection Table.

 

Step 3

Click on a row of the Selection Table to add all of the stocks in the selected stock group onto the Stock List Area.  Repeat as desired to add more stocks from other stock groups listed in the Selection Table.

 

 

 

Step 4

To remove any stocks, select ÒRemoveÓ from the Add/Remove Combo Box and click on the desired stock group on the Selection Table.  These stocks will be removed from the Stock List Area.

Step 5

Enter a beginning and ending date to analyze.  The date must be in the format DD-MMM-YYYY.  The ÒfromÓ day must be less than or equal to the ÒtoÓ day.  If the date entered falls on a weekend, it will roll back to the Friday before the weekend.

 

Step 6

To analyze the selected stocks, click the Go Button.  A new web browser window will open with a Java Applet that will cluster the stocks by similar performance patterns.  *Note: In case of difficulty opening the new window, make sure that the web browser allows Pop Ups.

 

Step 7

Alternatively, to test the program with input from a text file, click the Test Button.  A new web browser window will open that will give options for selecting an input file.  *Note: In case of difficulty opening the new window, make sure that the web browser allows Pop Ups.

 

Step 8

The new browser window will display the analysis page.  Follow the instructions in the ÒosmaÓ manual.

The result is a scatterplot of stocks clustered according to similar performance patterns.  See the instructions in the ÒosmaÓ manual for more information.
