The CS department maintains full and incremental backups on all servers used by the department. This FAQ describes how backups are handled and how to request file and directory restores.

[edit] I've accidentally deleted my files, can I get them back?

Chances are that unless you created and deleted the files on the same day, they are on one or more of our backup tapes. You can send an email to ITHelp to request recovery of these files. Please be as specific as you can about the files and directories in question.

[edit] How often are backups done?

Full backups of each CS server are done once a month. Incremental backups of files that have been changed since the last full backup are done daily. We have the ability to go back to any day withing the period covered by the backup tapes and recover files as they were on that day.

[edit] How far back do the backups go?

Generally the backups span a period of 3 to 4 months depending on the volume of new data that has to be backed up. As that period shrinks, we will add more tapes into the rotation. In the case of academic submissions (your files on corsair and teddy or those you turned in using submitd), those files are archived for longer periods. Still it is best to notify us of files to would like to have restored to have the best chance of getting them recovered.

[edit] I changed a file a few days ago, can I get back the previous version?

Yes. Incremental backups are done daily and the backup system keeps track of the dates files are changed. We can go back to any day within the period covered by our backup tapes and recover the version of the file as it was that day. To recover a previous version of a file, we need to know the date that it was changed.

[edit] I am still an IUPUI student, why can I no longer access my CS web site?

If you've not enrolled in a CS class for 2 consecutive semester, your account may have expired. An email would have been sent to your IUPUI two weeks prior to the removal of your account. In the past, if your account removal was prior to the current tape backup period, we would not be able to recover your files. Starting with the Fall 2007 semester, we will begin archiving accounts as part of the account removal process. If your files are in that archive, we will be able to recover them for you.
